I’ve been job hopping every 1-2 years and need advice.

Navigating Job Hopping: Seeking Career Advice

Job transitions can often be a double-edged sword. On one hand, they can lead to enhanced opportunities and better financial gains; on the other, they can leave a resume that raises eyebrows and prompts concern. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, you aren’t alone.

Recently, I’ve been reflecting on my career journey in the tax field. Over the past six years, I’ve made several job changes, typically every one to two years. While these moves were often motivated by small pay increases and the desire for a more satisfying role, the cumulative effect has created a resume that feels disheartening.

A significant factor in my decision to switch positions was the pandemic, which I used as an opportunity to seek incremental salary growth. Although I am now debt-free, the base salaries I encountered during these transitions often barely covered living expenses. Recently, I’ve settled into a more stable role, nearing the two-year mark, which has provided a welcome sense of comfort.

However, I am now contemplating relocating out of state, which raises concerns about my perceived work ethic given my job-hopping history. It’s disheartening, especially since my current employer sees potential in me and is eager to support my progress toward a partner-level position. Yet, taking on such a role in a high-cost living area feels like it could detract from precious family time.

As I weigh my options, I’m torn between diving into job applications and hoping potential employers will understand my circumstances, or possibly omitting earlier positions from my resume to alleviate concerns about my stability.

Here’s where I would like to hear from you all: Have you experienced a similar journey? How did you navigate the narrative of your resume when job-hopping? Any guidance you can provide would be invaluable as I look to make informed decisions about the next steps in my career. Your experiences and insights could help not only me but others in similar situations. Thank you in advance for your thoughts!
