I’ve been job hopping every 1-2 years and need advice.

Navigating Job Hopping: Seeking Career Guidance

In today’s ever-evolving job market, the phenomenon of job hopping has become both common and, at times, necessary. After spending six years in the tax industry, I find myself facing a concerning situation regarding my professional trajectory. My resume reflects a history of transitioning between positions every one to two years, which has left me questioning my work ethic and credibility.

The motivations behind my frequent changes were multifaceted. The pandemic prompted me to leverage opportunities for small pay increases, as I was fortunate enough to be debt-free and in a role that provided basic financial stability. As I approach the two-year mark in my current position—a role that has provided much-needed comfort—I am now contemplating a move out of state. However, I hold reservations about how my job-hopping history might impact my ability to secure a new position.

Currently, my employer has expressed a desire to mentor me towards a partner-level role, but considering the high cost of living in the area, I am hesitant to commit to a career path that would take time away from my family—something I deeply value.

As I embark on the job search process, I find myself at a crossroads: should I apply to new positions and hope that employers can empathize with my unique circumstances, or would it be more prudent to omit certain job experiences from my resume?

I would greatly appreciate insights from anyone who has navigated a similar path and has successfully advanced in their career. What strategies did you employ to overcome the stigma associated with job hopping? Any recommendations or words of wisdom would be incredibly valuable as I steer my career in a new direction.
