Is it just me or do we too frequently deify senior management? I don’t care that Bob is the President of The national Audit practice and that I should be shaking my in my boots as he approaches me. He’s just a fucking dude to me, and it’s pathetic to see him as anything else.

Dismantling the Myth of Executive Superiority

In today’s corporate environment, it often feels as though there is an unwritten rule that elevates senior management to a level of reverence that can be puzzling. A colleague recently expressed their frustration with this phenomenon, sharing their belief that, despite titles and ranks, executives are just people—flawed, imperfect, and deserving of no undue adulation.

Take, for example, the common reaction when encountering high-ranking officials. Someone might gasp and say, “Did you know you’re talking to Mark? He’s the CFO of the firm!” However, does that really matter in the grand scheme of things? Should a title dictate your regard for someone’s character or their actions? For many, including this colleague, the answer is a resounding no.

While it’s necessary to engage with clients and team members with the utmost seriousness—recognizing the responsibility that comes with such interactions—there’s little justification for being intimidated by someone’s title alone. The notion that one should feel awestruck simply because someone holds a senior position is not only outdated but can also be damaging.

Real leadership is rooted in respect, competence, and the ability to connect with those around you, not just in the power dynamics dictated by hierarchical structures. Treating executives as ordinary individuals can facilitate more honest conversations, build stronger relationships, and foster a more inclusive workplace.

In a world striving for equality and transparency, it’s time to challenge the idolatry of senior management. Recognizing their humanity might just pave the way for healthier dynamics in the workplace and ultimately lead to better collaboration and success. So, next time you find yourself before a senior leader, remember: they’re just people too, and there’s no need to let their title overshadow their humanity.
