interviewing for tax internship…what technical questions to expect?!

Preparing for a tax internship interview, specifically the technical portion! I have my second-round interview on Monday, and the interviewer mentioned it will be technical. How can I prep for this? I’m just starting my junior year, and I’ve only completed my introductory classes. Should I expect behavioral or situational questions, or will they focus on actual Accounting topics? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Congrats on making it to the second round of interviews! For a technical interview in a tax internship, you can expect questions related to tax concepts, Accounting principles, and possibly some calculations. Here are some areas you might want to prepare for:

    1. Basic Tax Concepts: Be familiar with federal income tax, tax brackets, deductions, credits, and types of taxable income. You might be asked to explain how these concepts apply to individuals or businesses.

    2. Tax Forms: Review common tax forms like 1040 (individual income tax return), W-2 (wage and tax statement), and 1099 forms (various types of income). Understanding how these forms relate to tax filings can be helpful.

    3. Accounting Principles: Since you’ve completed principle classes, you should review key concepts like the Accounting equation, journal entries, and how to prepare financial statements.

    4. Tax Calculations: Be prepared for some simple math problems, like calculating taxable income, determining tax owed based on brackets, or figuring out certain deductions.

    5. Tax Legislation: If you’re familiar with recent tax changes or major legislation (like the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act), it can help demonstrate your knowledge and interest in the field.

    6. Scenarios: They might present you with a hypothetical tax scenario and ask how you would approach it. Think through your problem-solving process.

Since it’s an internship position, they may understand you don’t have extensive experience yet, so focus on showing your eagerness to learn and any relevant coursework or projects.

Finally, don’t hesitate to ask clarification questions if you don’t understand something—they might appreciate your willingness to engage and learn. Good luck!
