Navigating Equipment Returns After Departing a Big Firm: A Personal Experience

After parting ways with a Big Four firm nearly ten months ago, I find myself in a bit of a predicament: I still have two laptops in my possession, one of which is non-functional.

Upon my departure, I filled out an equipment return survey, clearly indicating that I needed a shipping label and boxes to send back these devices. Given that I was working from home at the time, making a 40-minute trek to the office just to return company property seemed like an unnecessary hassle.

After several weeks of waiting, I decided to follow up. Unfortunately, my call was rerouted to a different office due to lack of availability on their end. The representative I spoke with noted my concerns and assured me that someone would return my call, but days turned into weeks, and I never heard back.

Fast forward a few months, and I now find myself needing to declutter my home office for my current job. Those two laptops are becoming increasingly congestive in my workspace, and I’m left feeling frustrated.

I recognize I’ll need to reach out again, but it shouldn’t be this challenging to return items that no longer belong to me. Is it too much to ask for a streamlined process in what should be a simple exchange?

If you find yourself in similar and frustrating situations, remember you’re not alone. Equipment return policies, especially after leaving a major corporation, can often be more cumbersome than anticipated. Stay persistent and advocate for your needs as you find resolution.
