The Struggles of Returning Equipment After Leaving a Big Firm: My Experience

Leaving a corporate job often comes with mixed emotions, but it can also present practical challenges—especially when it comes to returning company property. Around ten months ago, I made the decision to part ways with a Big Four firm, and I still find myself in possession of two laptops, one of which is non-functional.

When I departed from the firm, I completed a survey detailing the equipment that I had and indicated my need for a shipping label and boxes to facilitate the returns. Given that I was primarily working remotely, I preferred not to embark on a lengthy commute to the office, especially with the added hassle of parking costs.

After submitting the survey, I waited expectantly for the shipping materials to arrive, but to my disappointment, nothing came. I reached out for assistance, but my call was transferred to a different office due to the unavailability of support from my team. While I spoke with a representative who assured me that someone would call back, that promise went unfulfilled.

Fast forward a few months, and I find myself in a bit of a bind. My home office, which is essential for my current job, is becoming cluttered with these laptops that I no longer need. I acknowledge that I should probably reach out again, but it’s frustrating to feel like a simple return has turned into an uphill battle. It’s disheartening to think it should be easier to return equipment rather than navigate a maze of red tape.

In sharing my experience, I hope to shed light on the common hurdles many face when exiting large organizations. It’s a reminder that even in a digital age, sometimes the simplest tasks can become unnecessarily complicated. If you’re in a similar situation, don’t hesitate to persist in seeking resolution—sometimes it just takes a few extra follow-ups to get results.
