The Struggles of Returning Equipment After Leaving a Job: A Personal Reflection

Leaving a prominent firm can be both a relief and a challenge, especially when it comes to tying up loose ends. It’s been about ten months since I departed from one of the Big Four firms, and I find myself confronted with a rather unexpected issue: I still have two laptops in my possession—one of which is non-functional.

When I exited the company, I diligently completed a survey indicating the equipment I needed to return. Among my requests, I specifically mentioned the need for a shipping label and boxes. Given that I primarily worked remotely, making the trip to the office—a 40-minute commute with parking fees—was less than appealing.

After submitting my request, I waited patiently for the return materials to arrive. However, they never reached me. I decided to take matters into my own hands and called the office for assistance. Unfortunately, the call was redirected to a different branch, and after taking my contact information, the representative promised that someone would get back to me. As you can probably guess, that promise never materialized.

Fast forward a few months, and my home office is becoming increasingly cluttered with the leftover laptops. As I gear up for my current job, the need for a clean and functional workspace has become more pressing.

While I know I should probably make another attempt to resolve this by calling again, I can’t help but feel a sense of frustration. It shouldn’t be this complicated to return company property. For anyone else navigating a similar situation, I urge you to be persistent and patient. It’s essential to find the right channels and keep following up until your issue is resolved. After all, a tidy workspace can lead to improved productivity.
