The Ongoing Challenge of Returning Company Equipment: A Personal Experience
It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly ten months since I left my position at a Big Four firm. One of the more unexpected remnants of my time there, however, is the two laptops that are still taking up valuable space in my home office. Admittedly, one of them is non-functional, but both remain as lingering reminders of my previous employment.
Upon my departure, I was conscientious about the return process. I completed a survey detailing the equipment that needed to be sent back, clearly requesting shipping materials, including a box and a label. Since I primarily worked remotely, the idea of driving 40 minutes to the office, only to deal with parking and logistics, was far from appealing. I anticipated a smooth return, but it seems that was not meant to be.
After weeks passed without receiving any shipping materials, I decided to reach out for assistance. Unfortunately, my call ended up being redirected to a different office, and although the representative took my details and promised a follow-up, I never received a call back. Time slipped by, and with it, any hope of a straightforward return process.
Now, several months later, I find myself in a different position. As I progress further into my new role, my home office environment is crucial to my productivity. Those two laptops are no longer just remnants of my past—they have evolved into clutter that I need to eliminate.
The thought of making yet another phone call crosses my mind, but a nagging feeling persists: why is returning company property proving to be this complicated? The transition between jobs should be smooth, but this experience highlights the hurdles that can complicate even the simplest of tasks.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, know that you’re not alone. The struggle of returning company equipment can sometimes feel more daunting than the job itself. I plan to tackle this challenge head-on, but I can’t help but wonder how many others are in the same boat. Here’s to hoping for a resolution soon—both for my office space and my peace of mind!
