I’m feeling pretty frustrated with myself and worried about my career. A little over a month ago, I decided to take a leave of absence from my public Accounting job. I made the same choice last year because my mental health takes a serious hit when I’m working there. I thought stepping away would allow me to quickly find a new opportunity, but that hasn’t happened yet.
I’ve had two second-round interviews, but the one position I felt really optimistic about was offered to someone else. Now I’m starting to regret leaving my original job.

I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. It’s completely understandable to prioritize your mental health, especially in such a demanding field. Taking a step back wasn’t an easy decision, but it was a brave one, and it shows you’re aware of what you need.
Job searches can be stressful and unpredictable, and it’s tough when things don’t turn out how we hope. Remember that the interviews you’ve had are valuable experiences in themselves. They show that you have skills and potential that other employers recognize, even if they didn’t lead to an offer this time.
Try to be kind to yourself during this process. It’s okay to feel frustrated, but don’t let it define your worth or your future. Keep looking for opportunities that align with your goals and well-being. You’re not an idiot; you’re someone who’s trying to navigate a challenging situation. Have patience with yourself, and keep seeking support in other areas of your life as well. You’ve got this!
