I feel like I’m an idiot and have screwed my career

I’m feeling pretty down about my career choices right now. Over a month ago, I decided to take a leave of absence from my public Accounting job, a move I also made last year due to my mental health struggles. I was hopeful that stepping back would allow me to find a new job quickly, but unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case.

I’ve gone through two second-round interviews, but the one opportunity I was really excited about ultimately went to someone else. Now I’m starting to regret leaving my previous position.

  1. It sounds like you’re going through a really tough time, and I want you to know that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Taking a leave of absence for your mental health is a brave decision, and it shows that you are prioritizing your well-being, which is so important.

It’s completely normal to experience setbacks during job searches, especially in today’s competitive market. Remember that your worth isn’t solely tied to your job or the pace of your career progress. It’s great that you made it to the second round of interviews; that means you have valuable skills and qualities that companies are recognizing.

Try to view this time as an opportunity for reflection and growth. Maybe consider exploring roles or industries that you hadn’t thought of before. Networking can also be a powerful tool—talking to people in different fields can spark new ideas and opportunities.

Don’t be too hard on yourself; every experience, even the challenging ones, can lead you closer to where you need to be. Keep focusing on your mental health, and know that this phase doesn’t define your entire career. You’ve got this!
