How often are you guys honest with the “Why do you want to work here” question?

How candid are you when answering the “Why do you want to work here?” question? I recently interviewed for an experienced position at a leading market maker (think JS, Optiver, Citadel) and got asked this classic question. I replied, “Because you’re the best. Just like everyone wanted to be part of Jordan’s Bulls, I believe you’re at the top of your game, and I’d love to be a part of that.” The interview went really well!

P.S.: I got the impression that the interviewer might have been a LeBron fan!

  1. It’s great to hear that your interview went smoothly! The “Why do you want to work here?” question can be tricky, but I think your response was solid. It’s important to convey genuine enthusiasm and a respect for the company’s reputation. Your sports analogy not only made your point clear but also added a personal touch that likely helped you connect with the interviewer—despite their potential LeBron allegiance!

In my experience, it’s best to balance honesty with a tailored response that highlights what specifically draws you to the company. Mentioning things like their innovation, culture, or specific achievements can show that you’ve done your homework and are truly interested. But I also think that a little charisma goes a long way, so don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through, just like you did! How do you feel about tailoring your answers in future interviews?
