How long did it take you to complete your 150 credits? I’m a freshman studying management, and I recently took a managerial Accounting course (I’m not sure if that’s the right term, as English isn’t my first language). I really enjoyed the class. After talking with my advisor about possibly switching my major, she mentioned that I would need to stay an extra year to complete the 150 credits required for the CPA exam. I’ve been working on rearranging my schedule to see if I can finish in four years. I’m pretty close to making it work, but I’m wondering if it’s absolutely necessary to graduate within four years or if I could take a more relaxed approach. Additionally, how essential is it to become a certified CPA to succeed in this field? Can I still do well without it?

  1. It’s great to hear that you enjoyed your managerial Accounting class! The path to completing 150 credits can vary widely among students, but many take about 4 to 5 years. It’s definitely possible to finish in 4 years if you’re able to plan your schedule effectively, especially if you’re willing to take summer courses or heavier course loads during the regular semesters.

As for the CPA, while it’s not the only route to success in Accounting or management, having that certification can be a significant asset. It often opens up more opportunities and can lead to higher pay. However, there are many roles in management and Accounting where the CPA isn’t strictly necessary. You could consider gaining experience in the field first, and then decide if pursuing the CPA is the right move for you based on your career aspirations.

Ultimately, it’s important to find a balance that works for you. If taking an additional year would help reduce stress and allow you to enjoy your college experience more, it’s worth considering. Good luck with your studies!
