Controversial Opinion: Achieving Success in Public Accounting and Being an Effective Parent Don’t Mix
As a single person without kids, I’ve watched my colleagues struggle to balance their careers and family life. Public Accounting is demanding, especially during busy season, when many of us are expected to log over 70 hours a week. One colleague of mine has two young children but only gets to see them once a week because he’s stuck in the office until after bedtime. It’s heartbreaking for both him and his kids. After seeing this, I can’t see myself having kids while working in this field.

I can definitely see where you’re coming from, and it’s a tough reality for many in public Accounting. The demanding hours during busy season often make it incredibly challenging to balance family life and work.
However, I believe it’s possible to find ways to manage both successfully with the right strategies and support. For some parents, flexible work arrangements, clear boundaries, and good time management skills can help carve out quality time with their children, even during those busy months. Plus, not every firm has the same culture or workload expectations, and many are becoming more aware of the need for work-life balance.
While it may be difficult, it’s important to remember that everyone’s experience is different. Some parents find ways to make it work, and for others, it may not be feasible. It ultimately comes down to personal priorities and how one chooses to navigate their career and family life. It’s a complex issue, and I appreciate you bringing it up for discussion!
