HireVue Tech Etiquette

HireVue Tech Etiquette

I recently attended a networking event with fellow postgraduates aspiring to land front-office finance roles in London, and the topic of HireVue interviews came up. One person emphasized the importance of having a semi-professional setup, complete with a quality camera and microphone, to make a great impression. Everyone seemed to be on board with this idea.

I have to admit, I find this a bit surprising. Am I alone in thinking that my built-in HD laptop camera is sufficient? At most, I could use a basic webcam attached to my monitor, which is what I’ve typically seen from the investment bankers during conference calls.

Since I also dabble in photography, I could easily connect my 4K mirrorless camera with a sharp lens, professional audio, and lighting. But that seems a bit over the top for a HireVue interview, right?

  1. It’s an interesting topic! While I can understand the perspective that a solid built-in HD camera and microphone should suffice for a HireVue interview, the emphasis on a semi-professional setup reflects the competitive nature of the finance industry, especially in a city like London.

In a landscape where candidates are often evaluated not just on their qualifications but also on their virtual presence, many are willing to invest in high-quality gear to ensure they stand out. If a professional setup can enhance your presentation and help mitigate any potential technical issues, it might be worth considering — especially if you’re passionate about it and have the equipment already.

That said, it’s also true that authenticity matters. If you’re comfortable and can convey your skills and personality well with your current setup, there’s a strong argument for simplicity. Ultimately, striking a balance between looking polished and being genuine is key. If you do decide to use your advanced photography gear, just ensure that it complements your message rather than overshadows it.
