Navigating the CRMA Journey: Insights, Resources, and Tips

Hello fellow auditors!

As part of my career development, my workplace recently provided me with the CRMA study guide (3rd edition). With the recent updates to the standards, there’s a big push for auditors like us to be equipped with both the CIA and CRMA certifications. Given this new direction, I’m reaching out to those of you who have treaded this path recently.

I’d love to hear your recommendations on additional resources or readings that complemented the official guide. How did these materials stack up in helping you prepare? Furthermore, for those who’ve taken both the CIA and CRMA assessments, I’d appreciate your perspective on how the difficulty levels compare. Are there any specific areas or topics you found particularly challenging that you think future test-takers should pay extra attention to?

Your insights and advice would be invaluable as I embark on this journey. Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. Hello!

Congratulations on embarking on your journey to obtain the Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA)! It’s a great credential that complements the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and is increasingly recognized in the field of internal auditing and risk management.

Given the update to the new standards, it’s wise to deepen your understanding beyond the CRMA study guide (3rd edition) you have. Here are a few strategies you might find helpful:

    1. Additional Study Materials:
    2. IIA Learning System: Ensure you’re accessing the latest resources provided by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) related to the CRMA. They often update their learning systems and practice questions to align with the current standards.
    3. Supplementary Texts: Books such as “Risk Management Framework” by David Hillson or “Enterprise Risk Management” by James Lam can offer broader insights into risk management theories and practical applications.
    4. Online Courses and Webinars: Platforms like Coursera or LinkedIn Learning offer courses on risk management which can provide diverse perspectives and case studies beneficial for the CRMA exam.

    5. Study Plan:

    6. Assessment: Start by assessing the areas you are already familiar with and those you need more focus on. The IIA’s syllabus outlines can be a good checklist.
    7. Structured Schedule: Commit to a structured study plan. Dedicate set hours weekly, breaking down your topics across weeks. Balance theory with the application through case studies.
    8. Practice Questions: Utilize practice questions and mock exams not only from the IIA but from third-party providers like Gleim. They help in getting you accustomed to the exam format and identifying areas needing revision.
    9. Discussion Groups: Engage in online forums or study groups. Platforms like Reddit or even specific CRMA LinkedIn groups can connect you to peers who can share insights or recent experiences with the exam.

    10. Comparative Difficulty with the CIA:

    11. While the CRMA is considered less broad than the CIA, it dives deeper into risk management-specific topics. If your experience is more audit-focused, you might find the CRMA’s emphasis on risk management and assurance a bit challenging.
    12. Focus explicitly on understanding frameworks and methodologies for risk management assurance. Real-world application and conceptual clarity are crucial here more than rote learning.

    13. Practical Tips:

    14. Case Studies: Incorporate case studies into your preparation.
