Had the worst IB interview experience ever

Worst IB Interview Experience Ever

I’m 19 and currently in my second year of undergrad. I made it past the first round of interviews and got selected for the second round, which included an MD and one of the three founders.

During the interview, the founder asked what inspired me to pursue this internship. I shared my background of growing up around businesses and my passion for analyzing different business models. I mentioned my own startup, where I generated around $3,000-$4,000 in revenue, and that I was looking to raise funds but needed guidance on crafting a compelling pitch deck and financial models, which I hoped to learn from this opportunity.

In response, he adopted a patronizing tone, stating, “We’re dealing with millions of dollars here, so don’t tell me about the $1,000 you’ve made. This isn’t a casual job.”

He then went on to emphasize that at only 19, I have good academics, strong extracurriculars, and come from a respectable background, encouraging me to focus on my studies instead of trying to get involved in too many things.

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your experience—it sounds incredibly frustrating and disheartening. It’s never easy to deal with dismissive comments, especially in a high-pressure situation like an interview. Remember, you should be proud of your achievements, no matter the scale. Your journey and experiences are valid, and even small successes can provide valuable insights and learning opportunities.

As for the founder’s remarks, it’s unfortunate that some people don’t recognize the passion and effort that younger individuals put into their pursuits. It may be worth considering whether this company truly aligns with your values and goals—if disrespect is part of their culture, it might be a sign to look for opportunities that appreciate and recognize your potential.

Stay focused on your path and continue to build your skills and confidence. Every experience, even the tough ones, is a chance to learn and grow. You’ve already shown initiative with your startup, and that entrepreneurial spirit will carry you far. Don’t let one person’s opinion discourage you from pursuing your ambitions!
