Navigating the Next Chapter: Seeking Guidance After Graduation
Hello, wonderful readers!
Today marks an exciting milestone for me—I’ve just graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Accounting! As a 22-year-old stepping into the professional world, I’ve spent the last few years absorbed in the experiences shared within this community, and I’m finally ready to seek some advice as I transition into my career.
My journey begins with a strategic plan: I aim to start my full-time job applications in mid to late June. Before diving into the job market, my mother and I are planning a vacation to visit family I haven’t seen in a long time, which should provide a refreshing break before I embark on this new chapter.
Upon my return, I intend to target my job search starting with my local parish here in Louisiana. I believe my sister’s position in the public school system could be a valuable connection. Additionally, considering my five years of experience at Walmart, I’m contemplating applying for an office position within the company that would allow me to progress beyond my current sales role.
I’d greatly appreciate your thoughts on my approach! Is it advisable to apply to as many Accounting positions as I qualify for, whether they’re internships, part-time, or full-time roles? Although my overall GPA is a modest 3.1 and I haven’t had any internships, I hope to make a strong case for myself despite lacking traditional extracurriculars. Given my unique experiences, I’m curious about ways to enhance my resume and perform well in interviews.
One concern I have is how my GPA and limited experience might impact my job search. Is this something that hiring managers are likely to overlook, or should I be prepared for it to be a challenge? In terms of salary expectations, what would be reasonable for someone starting out in the Accounting field?
I’ve heard from professors and fellow students that obtaining the degree is a critical first step and that even entry-level roles can pave the way to better opportunities. With my minor in Spanish, I’ll also possess the necessary credits for the CPA exam once I complete the required 150 hours. Does this broaden my appeal as a job candidate?
Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts and questions. I welcome any advice, experiences, or insights you could share to help me as I embark on this journey. If you need further details or have questions for me, please don’t hesitate to ask!
Warm regards,
