Graduated today with my bachelor’s! Any advice for the future?

Starting My Journey: Seeking Guidance After Graduation

Hello, wonderful readers!

Today marks a significant milestone in my life—I’ve officially graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Accounting! As a 22-year-old navigating the transition from student to professional, I wanted to share my experience and seek some valuable advice as I take my first steps into the workforce.

After years of quietly observing discussions in this community, I felt compelled to reach out now that I find myself standing on the brink of what’s next. My immediate plan is to dive into the job market come mid to late June, but first, I’ll be spending some quality time with family on vacation—it’s been too long since we last connected.

Upon returning, I’ll begin my job applications, starting locally with my parish in Louisiana, where my sister’s connection within the public school system might prove beneficial. Additionally, I’m considering opportunities at Walmart—where I’ve worked for nearly five years. I hope to shift from my current role in sales to a more office-centered position within the company.

As I embark on this job search, I’m reaching out for insights! Is my approach a sound one? I’m curious about how aggressively I should be applying—should I consider all available Accounting positions, whether internships, part-time, or full-time, as long as I meet their requirements?

Despite graduating with a GPA of 3.1 and lacking formal internships or standout honors, I’m eager to learn how I might navigate the potential challenges of my job search. What can I realistically expect in terms of starting salary? How can I effectively showcase my experience? Apart from my educational background and retail experience at Walmart, what additional elements should I highlight in my resume and interviews to stand out?

I’ve heard from professors and seasoned professionals that securing even a modest entry-level Accounting position can lead to more lucrative roles down the line. The fact that I’ve completed the requisite 150 credit hours and possess bilingual skills (thanks to a minor in Spanish) could be advantageous, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on this perspective.

Thank you for taking the time to read my message. I sincerely appreciate any guidance or advice you can offer as I navigate this important transition. Please feel free to ask for more details if needed!

Looking forward to your insights,
