Graduated today with my bachelor’s! Any advice for the future?

Exciting New Beginnings: Seeking Guidance After Graduation

Hello, readers!

Today marks a significant milestone in my life—I have officially graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting! As I venture into this next chapter, I find myself filled with both excitement and a few apprehensions. That’s why I’m reaching out to this community for any wisdom or advice you can offer as I embark on my job search journey.

As I plan for the future, my current idea is to begin applying for full-time Accounting positions around mid to late June. This aligns with a family vacation my mother and I have planned for early June, where I will finally reconnect with relatives I haven’t seen in years. Upon my return, I intend to kick off my job applications, focusing initially on opportunities in my local area in Louisiana. I am considering applying at my parish, where my sister works in the public school system; I believe her connection might provide a helpful edge. Additionally, I am contemplating seeking advancement within Walmart, where I have been employed on the sales floor for almost five years.

Here’s where I could use your insights: How feasible is this plan? Should I cast a wide net and apply for any accounting-related roles, regardless of whether they are internships, part-time, or full-time positions, as long as I meet the qualifications?

I graduated with a GPA of 3.1 (not exactly stellar), and I haven’t had any internships or academic accolades to boost my profile. My work experience is primarily from Walmart. Will this impact my chances during the job search? What starting salary should I expect or negotiate for, given my background?

Moreover, since my resume lacks extracurricular activities or internships, I’m wondering how I can effectively showcase my strengths during interviews. I have the standard details like my educational background and work history, but I feel that I need more to truly stand out.

I’ve heard from various sources, including this subreddit and my professors, that merely having a bachelor’s degree in Accounting can open doors—even if the initial roles aren’t ideal. With my minor in Spanish and the essential 150 credit hours for my CPA exam, I hope this background will be advantageous. Is this perspective accurate?

I apologize for the lengthy message and myriad questions, but this is an important transition for me, and I genuinely value your feedback. If you need more context or details, please feel free to ask.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to your valuable advice
