Graduated today with my bachelor’s! Any advice for the future?

Celebrating Graduation: Seeking Advice as I Embark on My Career Journey

Hello, dear readers,

Today marks a significant milestone in my life as I proudly graduate with my bachelor’s degree in Accounting. After spending several years soaking in the knowledge and experiences from my studies, I felt it was finally time to share my journey and seek some advice as I transition into the professional realm.

As I kick off my job search, my current plan is to begin applying for full-time positions around mid to late June. This timeframe coincides with a family vacation I’ve planned with my mother, where I’ll be reconnecting with loved ones I haven’t seen in years. Once I return, I’ll focus on pursuing opportunities in Accounting, starting with my local parish in Louisiana. My sister’s connections within the public school system might prove to be beneficial. Additionally, I’m considering exploring upward mobility at Walmart, my current employer, to transition into an office role instead of remaining on the sales floor.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this approach. Given that I have limited experience—one interview for an internship in October 2024 and nearly five years of employment at Walmart—I am concerned about how this may impact my job search. My overall GPA stands at 3.1, and I didn’t receive any honors during graduation. Should I apply for all Accounting positions that align with my qualifications, whether they are internships, part-time, or full-time roles?

One question that weighs on my mind is whether my GPA and lack of internships will hinder my ability to secure a job. What kind of starting salary should I anticipate, and what figure is reasonable to request during salary negotiations? Since I haven’t participated in extracurricular activities or internships, I am curious about what key points I should highlight on my resume and in interviews to present myself as a compelling candidate.

I’ve heard from various professors and posts in this community that earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting can indeed open doors to entry-level positions, even if they aren’t ideal. This process can offer valuable experience that paves the way for future advancement. Additionally, possessing the 150 credit hours required for my CPA exam—thanks to some strategic choices, including a minor in Spanish—could be a significant advantage.

I apologize for the lengthy post filled with questions, but your insights would mean a lot to me. I’m eager to gather a range of perspectives and advice as I embark on this exciting, albeit daunting, chapter of my professional journey. Please
