Graduated today with my bachelor’s! Any advice for the future?

Embracing the Future: Seeking Guidance After Graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree

Hello, wonderful readers,

Today marks a significant milestone in my life as I proudly celebrate my graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting! As a 22-year-old who has been following this community for several years during my college journey, I feel it’s time to reach out for some guidance as I embark on the next chapter: navigating the job market.

My plan is to begin searching for full-time Accounting positions around mid to late June. The reason for this timeline is that I’ll be traveling with my mother to visit family I haven’t seen in a long time. Once I return, I intend to kickstart my job applications, focusing first on local opportunities. Specifically, I’m considering applying to my parish, as my sister works within the public school system here in Louisiana, which could open some connections. Additionally, I’m contemplating a move into an office position within Walmart, where I’ve been employed for nearly five years, shifting from sales floor duties to corporate roles.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this strategy. Is it wise to cast a wide net by applying to all available accounting-related positions, regardless of whether they are internships, part-time, or full-time, as long as I satisfy the requirements? I have some concerns about my academic performance; I graduated with a GPA of 3.1 and didn’t receive any honors or engage in internships. Will this affect my prospects in job hunting? Moreover, what starting salary can I realistically expect, and what should I think about requesting?

Given my lack of extracurricular activities or internships, I’m also curious about what specific skills or experiences I should highlight in my resume and during interviews to effectively market myself. I already have the basics covered—educational background and work experience—but I want to ensure I stand out.

I’ve heard from both professors and this community that having a degree in Accounting can provide a solid entry point into the field, even with less-than-stellar grades. Additionally, I have completed the necessary 150 hours for my CPA exam, including a minor in Spanish, which I hope will be an asset. Is this perspective accurate?

I apologize for the lengthy message filled with numerous questions, but I genuinely value your insights on this important journey in my life. Please feel free to ask any clarifying questions if needed.

Thank you for your time and support!
