Graduating with a Bachelor’s in Accounting: Seeking Guidance for the Next Steps

Hello, esteemed readers!

I’m excited to share that I’ve just completed my bachelor’s degree in Accounting! As a 22-year-old with a newfound degree in hand, I am venturing into the realm of professional job hunting and would appreciate your insights and advice.

After spending a few years absorbing the wealth of knowledge shared in this community, I felt it was time to reach out and engage. As I prepare for my job search, my plan is to start applying for full-time positions around mid to late June. This timeline aligns with a family vacation I have planned to visit relatives I haven’t seen in quite some time.

Upon returning, I intend to kick off my applications, targeting positions at my local parish in Louisiana since my sister works within the public education system, which could provide an advantageous connection. Additionally, I’m considering climbing the corporate ladder within Walmart, where I have been employed for nearly five years, by transitioning into an office role.

I would love to gather your thoughts on my approach. Given that I’m new to the job market, having only experienced one interview for an internship last year, I’m curious about the following:

  1. Application Strategy: Should I apply for all Accounting positions within my qualifications, including internships, part-time roles, and full-time jobs?

  2. GPA Concerns: With a GPA of 3.1 and no honors or substantial internship experience, is there a concern that this might hinder my job search?

  3. Salary Expectations: What is a reasonable starting salary to anticipate, and what should I feel comfortable negotiating for?

  4. Resume and Interview Tips: In light of my limited extracurricular activities and internship experiences, what specific elements should I highlight in my resume and during interviews to make a strong impression? I have the essentials, including my educational background and work history, but additional guidance would be invaluable.

I’ve been advised that entry-level positions in accounting can indeed open doors to greater opportunities, even if they may not seem ideal initially. With my minor in Spanish and the 150 credit hours required for the CPA exam, I’ve been led to believe that my bilingual skills and educational qualifications could enhance my employability. Is this a common perspective?

I apologize for the lengthy post and the multitude of questions, but your wisdom in this matter means a lot to me. Please feel free to respond with any insights or additional inquiries you
