Graduated today with my bachelor’s! Any advice for the future?

Navigating the Next Chapter: Seeking Guidance After Graduation

Today marks a significant milestone in my life—I’ve officially graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting! As a 22-year-old fresh out of college, I’m excited to step into the professional world, but I also recognize that this transition brings new challenges. After spending years observing this community, I’m reaching out for your wisdom and insights as I embark on my career journey.

My Current Plans

As I prepare to dive into the job market, I’ve outlined a strategy to begin my applications around mid to late June. I hope to take a family vacation during early to mid-June, which is long overdue since I haven’t seen some family members in years. Upon returning, I plan to target local job opportunities, starting with my parish in Louisiana, where my sister works in the public school system and might prove to be a valuable connection. I’m also considering moving up within Walmart, where I’ve been employed for nearly five years, by exploring office positions instead of continuing on the sales floor.

Seeking Your Expertise

Given this plan, I’m eager to know what you think. Here are a few questions that I’d appreciate your input on:

  1. Job Applications: Should I consider applying for any and all roles in Accounting that I qualify for, including internships, part-time, and full-time positions?

  2. GPA Concerns: I graduated with a GPA of 3.1—not particularly impressive, and I didn’t receive any honors. How much do you think this will impact my job search, especially since I lack formal internships?

  3. Expectations on Salary: What starting salary should I realistically anticipate, and how should I approach salary negotiations?

  4. Enhancing My Resume: With limited extracurricular activities and no internships to showcase, what specific elements should I highlight on my resume and during interviews to effectively present my skills and experiences? I already plan to include my educational background and work history.

  5. Entry-Level Opportunities: I’ve heard from both professors and members of this community that in Accounting, a bachelor’s degree can open the door to various opportunities, even if they aren’t ideal. Additionally, I have completed the necessary 150 hours for my CPA exam/license and hold a minor in Spanish. Do you think these factors will bolster my job prospects?

Closing Thoughts
