Graduated today with my bachelor’s! Any advice for the future?

Celebrating Graduation: Seeking Guidance for My Next Steps in Accounting

Hello, fellow readers,

Today marks a significant milestone in my life: I’ve officially graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting! After spending the last few years absorbing insights and advice in this community, I felt it was time to reach out for some guidance now that I’m ready to embark on my professional journey.

As a 22-year-old graduate, I’m eager to dive into the job market by mid to late June. My plan is to begin applying for full-time positions after a family vacation in early June, where I’ll reconnect with relatives I haven’t seen in a long time. Upon my return, I intend to explore opportunities starting with my local parish (I live in Louisiana) and potentially my current employer, Walmart, where I have worked for nearly five years. Transitioning into an office role seems appealing, allowing me to climb the corporate ladder further.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this strategy. Do you think it’s wise for me to apply broadly to any available Accounting positions that I meet the qualifications for—whether they be internships, part-time, or full-time? I graduated with a GPA of 3.1, which, while respectable, doesn’t include honors or awards. I’ve had limited interview experience as well—just one for an internship last October. How much will that impact my job search?

Moreover, I’m curious about what starting salary I should anticipate and what I should consider asking for during negotiations. Given my lack of internships or extracurricular experiences, I’m seeking advice on what to highlight in my resume and during interviews to make a compelling case for myself. I believe I’ve included the essentials, such as educational background and work experience, but I know there’s more to it.

I’ve heard from both this community and my professors that with a degree in Accounting, it’s possible to gain entry into various roles, even those that may not be ideal. Leveraging this experience to progress toward better opportunities down the line is something I’m hopeful about. Plus, I have already completed the required 150 hours for my CPA exam, thanks in part to a minor in Spanish and additional credits from Spanish CLEP tests and English ACT scores. Does this align with what many of you have experienced in the field?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I truly appreciate any insights, tips, or personal experiences you can share as I navigate this important transition in my life.
