Celebrating Graduation: Seeking Guidance for My Future in Accounting
Hello, readers!
Today marks a significant milestone in my life as I proudly graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. After months of contemplation, I’ve decided it’s time to reach out to this community for advice as I embark on my journey to find my first Accounting position.
As a 22-year-old, I have been following this forum for a while, soaking up valuable insights during my college years. Now, with graduation behind me, I am eager to dive into the job market. My plan is to begin my job applications in mid to late June after a family vacation. This time away will allow me to reconnect with relatives and recharge before tackling the job hunt.
Upon my return, I intend to start by applying at my local parish in Louisiana. My sister, who works within the public school system, might prove to be a helpful connection. -
Am I on the right track with my plan to apply for Accounting positions, and should I target all types of roles—internships, part-time, or full-time—as long as I meet the qualifications?
-
Considering my overall GPA of 3.1 and my limited experience, will my job search be challenging? I haven’t participated in internships, and my sole work experience has been at Walmart over the past five years.
-
What starting salary should I anticipate and be prepared to negotiate for?
-
In light of my lack of extracurricular activities or internships, what additional elements should I emphasize on my resume and during interviews to enhance my appeal to potential employers?
From discussions I’ve had with professors and other professionals in the field, I’ve learned that securing an entry-level job in accounting is possible with my degree, even if it’s not ideal. They’ve informed me that experience in any role can pave the way for better opportunities down the line. Moreover, my completion of the 150 credit hours required for my CPA license, bolstered by my minor in Spanish and other academic credits, should give me an edge in the job market.
I appreciate your patience with my lengthy message, as each piece of advice is crucial at this juncture in my
