Navigating the Transition: Seeking Advice After Earning My Accounting Degree
Hello everyone,
Today marks a significant milestone in my journey as I proudly graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Accounting at the age of 22. After years of observing discussions in this community, I felt it was time to contribute my own thoughts and seek out your valuable advice as I prepare to embark on my professional path.
As I step into this exciting new chapter, I have a plan in mind. I aim to begin my job search in earnest by mid to late June. Before that, my mother and I are planning a vacation to reconnect with family members I haven’t seen in a while. Upon my return, I’m eager to start applying to Accounting positions, beginning with opportunities at my local parish here in Louisiana. I also consider reaching out to Walmart, my current employer, to explore potential office positions that could facilitate my career advancement from the sales floor.
I would love to get your thoughts on this approach. With only one internship interview under my belt from October, I’m curious about whether I should cast a wide net and apply for any and all accounting roles (internships, part-time, or full-time) for which I meet the qualifications. My overall GPA is a modest 3.1, and while I didn’t receive any honors or accolades during graduation, my experience is primarily tied to nearly five years at Walmart since high school. How might this affect my job search?
Additionally, I’m wondering about salary expectations for entry-level accounting positions and what a reasonable starting salary would be. Since I lack extracurricular activities and internship experiences, I would appreciate any tips on what to showcase on my resume and how to present myself in interviews to make a strong impression. I have taken the initiative to establish a solid foundation with my education and work experience, but I want to ensure I’m effectively highlighting my strengths.
I’ve heard from both my professors and this community that holding a bachelor’s degree can facilitate entry into the accounting field, even if the first job isn’t ideal. I hope that my 150 credit hours, thanks to my bilingual skills in Spanish and coursework from CLEP exams and other transferred academic credits, will assist me on this journey. Is this perspective accurate?
Thank you for your time and any insights you can offer. Your advice is invaluable to me as I set out to launch my career. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you need more details or have additional questions.
Looking forward to your responses!
Warm regards,
