Getting the ACCA started is confusing

Starting ACCA Can Be Overwhelming

Hello everyone,

Let’s start with some questions, then I’ll share my frustrations.

It looks like in Abu Dhabi, the exams for BT, MA, FA, and LW are offered online initially.

I’ve scheduled BT for June 1st, but after reviewing the material, it seems quite manageable, and I wish I could take it sooner. I’ll need to check if rescheduling is an option.

I would appreciate any advice on how to space out these first four exams and what timeline to follow:

  • Should I take BT and MA on June 1st together or tackle them one at a time?
  • Is it true that I can’t sit for LW until I complete the other three applied knowledge exams? I can indeed book through the BC website, so I’m considering doing BT and MA in June, followed by FA and LW in September.

Frustrations

Honestly, I’m feeling pretty lost on how to get started with the ACCA. My experience with the CFA was much more straightforward.

  • When I registered for the ACCA on their website, the buttons to schedule my exams were greyed out.
  • I called the Dubai office, but it didn’t connect. After making an international call, the person I reached just redirected me to the British Council number, which also didn’t work. I eventually found the Abu Dhabi number online and was able to get assistance to register over the phone.
  • After completing my registration and payment, I discovered that I needed a separate ProctorU account to schedule my exam.

Seriously…

  1. Hi there!

I totally understand your frustration—navigating the ACCA process can indeed be confusing, especially if you’re used to a more straightforward path like the CFA. Here are a few thoughts on your questions:

    1. Staggering Exams: It’s generally a good idea to stagger your exams if you feel that might help with your studying. Since BT and MA are both part of the Applied Knowledge exams, you could choose to do them both on June 1st if you feel confident. However, if you think you’d benefit from spacing them out, it might be best to do them sequentially so that you can focus more on each subject.

    2. LW Timing: You are correct that you typically need to complete the other Applied Knowledge exams (BT, MA, and FA) before attempting the LW exam. This will help ensure you have a solid foundation before moving on to law, which can be quite different in terms of content.

Given that, a schedule like BT and MA in June and then FA and LW in September seems solid. It will give you some time to really digest each subject before moving on to the next.

Regarding the technical issues you faced, it sounds incredibly frustrating! Sometimes the various systems can be a bit disjointed, especially with multiple accounts needed for different services. Just remember you’re not alone in this; many others have had similar experiences. If you run into any more trouble, don’t hesitate to reach out to the ACCA support or even community forums for tips from others who might have faced similar challenges.

Hang in there! It will get easier as you get more accustomed to the process. Best of luck with your studies!
