First year associate – I don’t know where to go from here

Navigating the Challenges of a First-Year Associate in Tax: A Personal Reflection

As I sit here working from home, wrapped in the blankets of my bed and overwhelmed by emotions, I feel compelled to share my journey as a first-year associate at a Big Four firm. With my first year coming to a close in July, I find myself at a crossroads. The landscape of my workplace has changed dramatically, leaving me as the only remaining first-year associate in my group, following a series of involuntary transitions and layoffs that have affected my colleagues.

Initially, I joined a team of five new associates, filled with hope and ambition. Fast forward to now, and the reality has set in: I am navigating a grueling work schedule of over 40 hours per week, with many weeks reaching upwards of 50, 70, or even 80 hours. Recently, I received notice that I will be assigned to two more clients, but the workload has yet to be reflected in my schedule. The intensity and demands of this position feel relentless.

Compounding my struggles is the challenge of obtaining my CPA certification. I’m preparing to tackle the AUD exam for the fourth time on Monday, and my most recent experience with the FAR exam was disheartening. Despite feeling more prepared than ever, my initial review of the results indicates a drop of 17 points from my previous attempt. It’s a discouraging setback that weighs heavily on my mind.

At this point, I find myself questioning my career path. The exhaustion is palpable, and I know that the upcoming months promise to be incredibly taxing. The notion of not advancing to senior associate status is daunting, especially considering the current state of the job market. Yet, amid all these struggles, I can’t help but ponder whether a future in Accounting is the right choice for me.

I am sharing this reflection not only as a personal venting but also in the hope of connecting with others who might relate to the pressures and uncertainties of starting a career in a demanding field like tax. While the road ahead appears challenging, I recognize the importance of seeking support and considering new paths.

If you find yourself in a similar situation or have insights to share, I would love to hear from you. Together, we can navigate these difficulties and explore the possibilities that lie ahead.
