First year associate – I don’t know where to go from here

Navigating Challenges as a First-Year Associate in Tax: A Personal Reflection

As I approach the conclusion of my first year as an associate in one of the Big Four tax firms, I find myself reflecting deeply on my journey thus far. Currently, I’m working from home, where I’ve retreated to my bed, overwhelmed and emotional. The reality of my situation is daunting: I started as one of five new associates, but now, I am the only first-year left in my group. The others have either been reassigned or faced layoffs.

The workload is intense. From now until the end of November, I’m scheduled for over 40 hours a week, with many weeks exceeding 50, and some even reaching 70 to 80 hours. I recently received emails indicating that I’ll be assigned to two additional clients, but those hours have yet to be reflected on my schedule. The pace is relentless, and I’m feeling the strain.

On top of that, preparation for the CPA exams has been a difficult challenge. I’m gearing up to retake the AUD section for the fourth time on Monday. After feeling optimistic and well-prepared for my third attempt at the FAR exam, the news of my score revealed a surprising drop of 17 points from my previous try. It’s disheartening, to say the least.

Right now, I’m at a crossroads. I’m utterly exhausted, both mentally and physically, and the prospect of the next few months fills me with dread. I grapple with the fear of not making it to senior associate status, especially amidst the current uncertainties in the job market. This situation is forcing me to question my commitment to a career in Accounting.

I know many face similar challenges in the high-pressure environment of public Accounting, and it’s critical to acknowledge how isolating this journey can feel. I am striving to find a path forward, balancing my commitment to my career with my mental well-being. If you’re grappling with similar feelings, remember you are not alone; the pressures we face are intense, but it’s important to seek support and explore what truly aligns with our aspirations.
