First year associate – I don’t know where to go from here

Navigating the Challenges of a First-Year Associate in Tax

As I sit in my home office, a familiar wave of frustration and sadness washes over me. I’m a first-year associate in tax at a Big Four firm, nearing the completion of my first year in July. Yet, instead of feeling a sense of achievement, I find myself overwhelmed and isolated. I am currently the only first-year associate left within my team, a stark contrast to the five of us who started together. The dynamic has shifted dramatically as colleagues have been reassigned or, unfortunately, laid off.

The workload has intensified. My schedule for the remainder of November alone exceeds 40 hours per week, but it’s not unusual to see weeks pushing past 50, with some days even spiraling into the 70 to 80 hour range. Recently, I received notifications that I’ll be taking on additional clients, yet they aren’t even reflected in my current workload. The pressure is mounting.

Adding to my stress, I’m also grappling with the CPA exams. This coming Monday, I’ll be attempting the AUD section for the fourth time. I’ve just received my third FAR score, and despite feeling more prepared than ever, my preliminary score reveals a disheartening drop of 17 points from my last attempt.

There are moments when I feel completely defeated. The exhaustion is palpable, and I know that the next few months are likely to be grueling. I dread the possibility of not advancing to senior associate, particularly in this challenging job market. The desire to continue in the Accounting field is waning, as I grapple with these growing burdens.

I share this not just as a cathartic release, but to connect with others who may be experiencing similar struggles. The path of a first-year associate can be riddled with challenges, but recognizing and voicing these feelings can be the first step toward navigating them. If you find yourself in a similar situation, remember that you are not alone. Sharing our stories and seeking support from one another can help lighten the load.
