As I near the end of my internship, I’m faced with a significant decision: Should I disclose to my manager that I’ve chosen to postpone my graduate studies? Allow me to share my journey, which might resonate with others in similar professional crossroads.

Recently, I graduated with aspirations of pursuing a master’s degree this fall. I’ve secured a spot at my preferred university and even registered for classes, complete with a hefty tuition bill. However, life has thrown me a curveball.

This spring, I undertook an internship with the expectation that I would continue my educational path. Internships often require students to be enrolled, so I felt confident about my plans. Yet, as the job market presents new challenges, I’ve decided to delay my admission for a year. The institution has graciously allowed me to defer, and I find myself considering a job opportunity that begins in September. Given the uncertainty of the job market, it seems prudent to seize this offer rather than risk unemployment.

Up until now, I’ve communicated to colleagues and mentors that I would embark on my master’s program this year. Maintaining that narrative has become increasingly stressful as reality shifts beneath my feet.

My current internship could lead to a return offer, but there’s a catch. I’m interested in a different team that has not hired in recent years, making my prospects less than promising. It begs the question: Should I proactively discuss my change in academic plans with my manager? Additionally, would it be appropriate to inquire about potential return opportunities on the team I’m eyeing?
