Navigating Career Decisions Post-Internship: To Disclose or Not to Disclose?
As I approach the completion of my internship, I find myself wrestling with a significant career choice: Should I inform my manager that I’ve decided not to return to school just yet?
Let me provide some context.
I recently graduated and had plans to further my education this fall by pursuing a Master’s degree. I was thrilled to be accepted into my program of choice and even registered for classes, complete with the accompanying tuition fees.
Earlier this year, I embarked on a spring internship, operating under the assumption that continuing my education was all but a certainty—a common practice for interns in my field. However, as the job market has evolved and uncertainty looms, I’ve come to a pivotal decision: I’m considering deferring my studies for at least a year. Fortunately, my university is accommodating of this change, and I have even received a job offer that starts in September. Turning it down feels too risky, as I could find myself without a position.
Throughout this transition, I have maintained the narrative that I’m still on track for graduate school. Admitting otherwise has become increasingly uncomfortable, and I find myself grappling with honesty in my professional environment.
Ideally, I would only pursue my Master’s this year if I were to receive a return offer from my internship, particularly from a different team I’m drawn to. Unfortunately, given the organizational structure, it seems unlikely—I’ve learned they haven’t onboarded anyone for the past two years.
This brings me to my current dilemma: Should I confide in my manager about my decision to postpone my graduate studies? Furthermore, would it be wise to inquire about potential opportunities on the other team for a return offer?
In the end, it’s crucial to weigh the importance of transparency against the potential outcomes of my career path. Open communication can foster trust and may reveal unexpected opportunities, but navigating this conversation requires careful consideration.
I welcome any insights or experiences others may have had in similar situations. How did you approach discussing a significant pivot in your plans with your manager, and what outcomes did it lead to?
