Finishing my internship soon, should I tell my manager I’m not going back to school?

Navigating Career Decisions: To Disclose or Not to Disclose Your Future Plans

As I approach the conclusion of my internship, I find myself in a bit of a quandary regarding my next steps. It’s an experience that many new graduates can relate to—balancing career aspirations with the unpredictability of the job market.

Having recently graduated, I was all set to continue my academic journey by enrolling in a master’s program this fall. I secured a spot at my top-choice university and registered for classes, along with all the associated financial commitments. As I wrap up my spring internship, which was predicated on the assumption that I’d be returning to school, I’ve recently had a change of heart.

With the current job landscape appearing uncertain, I’ve decided to defer my graduate studies for at least a year. The university has graciously allowed this postponement, and I’m considering stepping into the workforce instead, especially since I’ve received a job offer elsewhere starting this September. Given the state of the economy, I’m hesitant to let this opportunity slip away—fearing it could lead to a prolonged job search.

Throughout this process, I’ve inadvertently misled many by perpetuating the narrative of starting my master’s program this year. This has only contributed to the stress of my situation, and I worry about the honesty of my intentions. The only circumstance under which I would consider pursuing my degree this year would be if I were offered a position on a different team within my current internship—an opportunity that seems unlikely, as this particular team has not taken on new staff in over two years.

So, here I stand at a crossroads. My internal debate centers on whether I should confide in my manager about my decision to defer grad school. Should I express my interest in a potential return offer on that elusive team? The fear of being candid is palpable, but the potential benefits of clear communication could outweigh the risks.

Navigating these professional waters is undoubtedly complex. Have any of you faced a similar dilemma? How did you handle the conversation with your employer regarding your future plans? Your insights could be invaluable as I ponder my next steps in this pivotal moment of my career.
