As my internship comes to a close, I find myself at a crossroads that requires careful consideration of my future. Recently, I graduated with the intention of pursuing a Master’s degree this fall. I even secured my spot at my preferred university and enrolled in classes, which has resulted in a notable tuition commitment.

Initially, my internship this spring aligned perfectly with my plans to return to school. However, after assessing the current job market, I have decided to defer my graduate studies for at least a year. The institution has graciously agreed to this change, allowing me the freedom to shift my focus toward starting my career instead. With a job offer slated to begin in September, I am concerned about passing it up and risking unemployment.

Throughout this process, I’ve found myself in a bit of a bind. I’ve been vocal about my plans to start graduate school this year, which has led to some uncomfortable moments given my current change of direction. It feels disingenuous to maintain that narrative when my priorities have shifted so significantly.

The only scenario that might prompt me to reconsider my immediate return to school is if I were to receive a return offer from my current internship on a different team that intrigues me. However, given that this particular team hasn’t onboarded anyone in the last two years, the likelihood of that happening seems slim.

This raises a pressing question: should I be transparent with my manager about my decision to defer grad school? Additionally, is it appropriate to inquire about potential opportunities to secure a return offer in the other team? Navigating these discussions will be crucial as I plan my next steps, and I want to ensure that I approach them thoughtfully.

As I move forward, I recognize that honesty and open communication could pave the way for a more fruitful path.
