Finishing my internship soon, should I tell my manager I’m not going back to school?

Navigating Career Decisions: Should You Inform Your Manager About Deferred Graduate School Plans?

As my internship comes to a close, I find myself in a bit of a quandary regarding my future educational and career path.

After successfully completing my undergraduate degree, I had every intention of continuing my studies in graduate school this fall. I was thrilled to receive acceptance into my preferred program, and I even registered for classes with the expectation of diving into my master’s degree. However, recent developments in the job market have prompted me to reconsider my plans.

Earlier this year, I secured a spring internship that I believed would bolster my academic and professional credentials as I prepared to transition into graduate studies. It was a strategic move, assuming I would need practical experience while studying. However, the evolving job landscape has led me to rethink my immediate future. I am now contemplating deferring my graduate program for at least a year, a choice that my university has agreed to, and instead, I have received a compelling job offer elsewhere starting this September. The fear of turning down this opportunity and facing potential unemployment is daunting.

Throughout this process, I’ve maintained a façade, continuously assuring my colleagues that I would begin my master’s program this year. This has created an uncomfortable situation, as I am not being entirely truthful about my plans.

The only scenario in which I would reconsider my initial decision to pursue graduate school this fall is if I were offered a position on a different team within my current internship. However, the odds are slim, as this specific team hasn’t made any new hires in the last two years.

Now, I am faced with an important decision: Should I communicate my change of plans to my manager? Would it be wise to inquire about the possibility of a return offer for that elusive position on the other team?

It’s a challenging dilemma, and I am torn between my desire for transparency and the uncertainty of how my manager might react. Ultimately, this decision could significantly impact my career trajectory, and navigating it thoughtfully is essential.

As I ponder the next steps, I hope to find clarity in this crossroads of academics and professional life, ensuring that whatever path I choose, it aligns with my long-term goals.
