As my internship draws to a close, I find myself facing a significant decision: Should I inform my manager that I will not be returning to school this fall?

Let me provide some context. I recently graduated with my undergraduate degree and had ambitious plans to pursue a master’s degree this autumn. I am thrilled to have been accepted into my dream university and even registered for classes, resulting in a substantial tuition commitment.

Earlier this year, I secured an internship in the spring, believing it would align nicely with my academic pursuits. Internships often require students to be actively enrolled in a degree program, a requirement I was initially prepared to fulfill.

However, the ever-changing job market has made me reconsider my path. I am contemplating deferring my graduate school plans for at least a year, particularly since the institution has kindly agreed to this delay. Instead, I have received a job offer elsewhere, set to commence in September. Given the current economic climate, the thought of declining this opportunity and potentially facing unemployment is daunting.

Throughout this period, I’ve been telling colleagues and supervisors that I am on track for graduate school, and maintaining this façade has been less than enjoyable.

The only scenario in which I might reconsider pursuing my master’s degree this year would be if I receive a return offer for a different team at my current internship — a prospect that seems unlikely given their hiring freeze over the past two years. It’s a lean operation, and competition for openings is tough.

Now, I am at a crossroads. Should I share my plans to defer graduate school with my manager? Moreover, would it be appropriate to inquire about potential opportunities for a return offer on the other team? This conversation could not only clarify my future but also strengthen my professional relationship with my manager.

As I weigh my options, I recognize the importance of transparency in the workplace. Honesty can foster a more genuine connection and may pave the way for future opportunities. However, I also acknowledge that navigating these discussions requires careful consideration of timing and approach.
