Navigating Career Decisions: Should I Share My Graduate School Plans with My Manager?
As I near the end of my internship, I find myself facing a complex situation regarding my future academic and career trajectory, and I could use some guidance.
Having recently completed my undergraduate studies, I was excitedly preparing to transition to graduate school for my master’s degree this fall. I had been accepted into my top choice university, registered for classes, and even faced the daunting tuition costs—a scenario many fresh graduates can relate to.
Earlier this year, I secured a spring internship that aligned perfectly with my intended plan to pursue my master’s. An understanding of academia’s typical requirements meant that I would need to be enrolled as a student for such internships. However, as I began to consider the realities of today’s turbulent job market, my resolve began to waver. I have come to the conclusion that deferring my graduate studies by a year might be the most prudent choice for my career. After all, I’ve received a job offer that commences this September, and the thought of turning it down only to face potential unemployment is quite daunting.
Throughout this internship, I have maintained the narrative that I will be starting my graduate program this year, which has led to a somewhat overwhelming sense of discomfort. It’s not easy maintaining a facade, especially when I know I might be changing my course so drastically.
My only real consideration for proceeding with my master’s degree this fall lies in the potential for a return offer from my current internship—a return offer on a different team that I find particularly intriguing. However, it is unlikely that I will be extended such an offer, given that this team hasn’t hired anyone in the past two years due to its lean structure.
This brings me to my current dilemma: Should I be transparent with my manager about my decision to defer graduate school? Additionally, should I inquire about possibilities for a return offer with this appealing team I’m interested in? It’s a delicate balance of honesty and professional strategy, and I want to ensure I approach this conversation thoughtfully.
