Finishing my internship soon, should I tell my manager I’m not going back to school?

Navigating Career Transitions: Should I Share My Educational Changes with My Manager?

As I approach the conclusion of my internship, I find myself at a crossroads that requires careful consideration. Recently, I graduated with plans to pursue my master’s degree this fall, with enrollment confirmed and tuition fees already looming.

Earlier this year, I secured a valuable internship which I believed would complement my academic journey. However, due to the unpredictable job market, I now believe it’s wise to defer my graduate studies for at least a year. The university has graciously allowed this postponement, and I’m contemplating stepping directly into the workforce instead.

I’ve received an enticing job offer set to begin this September, which adds to my concerns about declining the opportunity and potentially facing unemployment. With this in mind, I feel an increasing strain from the need to maintain the façade of pursuing my master’s degree, particularly when discussing my future with colleagues and mentors.

The only scenario that might compel me to continue with my original academic plan this year would be if I were offered a position on a different team within my current organization—perhaps the team I’m truly interested in. However, I understand that they haven’t onboarded anyone in quite some time, making this a long shot.

This leads to my pressing question: Should I open a dialogue with my manager about my decision to defer grad school? Furthermore, would it be prudent to inquire about potential opportunities for a return offer on that desired team, despite the low likelihood?

Navigating this transition requires both honesty and strategy. I must weigh the benefits of transparency against the potential impact on my current role and future opportunities. As I consider these factors, I’m eager to hear thoughts from others who have faced similar dilemmas. Your insights could provide the guidance I need to make an informed decision.
