As I approach the conclusion of my internship, I find myself in a rather tricky situation that many might resonate with—how honest should I be with my manager about my future aspirations?

Let me explain. Earlier this year, I graduated with the intention of pursuing a master’s degree this fall. I was fortunate enough to be accepted into my preferred university and even registered for classes, all set with a rather hefty tuition fee looming overhead.

During spring, I secured an internship that aligned perfectly with my initial plans to return to school for my Master’s, as internships are typically a prerequisite for students. However, given the current climate of the job market, I’ve decided to defer my enrollment and instead jump into the workforce. My university has agreed to this postponement, which is a relief. The prospect of starting a new job seems promising, especially since I have an offer that begins this September. The fear of declining this opportunity and finding myself unemployed is very real.

Throughout this process, I’ve continued to communicate my plans about going back to school with those around me, including my colleagues, which has been somewhat stressful considering my change of heart. The only scenario that might compel me to attend graduate school this year would be if I received a return offer from my current internship for a different team I’m particularly interested in. However, the odds seem slim since the team has not hired anyone in the last couple of years.

Now, I face a pivotal choice: Should I discuss my decision to defer further studies with my manager? More importantly, should I take the opportunity to inquire about potential return offers for that specific team?

This situation isn’t just about personal aspirations; it reflects a larger trend where students-and newcomers are reevaluating their paths in light of a volatile job market. Navigating these discussions with transparency and professionalism could ultimately aid in career growth, even if it feels daunting.

As I weigh my options, what I’ve learned is that honesty tends to cultivate stronger professional relationships. So, moving forward, I’ll be reflecting on how best to approach this conversation with my manager in a way that’s beneficial for both of us—and for my career trajectory as well.
