Finishing my internship soon, should I tell my manager I’m not going back to school?

Navigating Career Decisions: To Share or Not to Share Your Future Plans?

As my internship comes to an end, I find myself in a bit of a conundrum. This spring, I embarked on an internship with clear intentions of pursuing my Master’s degree this fall at my chosen university. I had even signed up for classes and tackled a hefty tuition bill, believing that the path ahead was straightforward.

However, as many of us know, the job market can be unpredictable. I’ve recently reconsidered my plans and decided to defer my admission for at least a year. This decision is influenced by a positive job offer I received for September—an opportunity I feel compelled to pursue in light of the current employment climate. The thought of declining this position and potentially facing unemployment is quite daunting.

Throughout this process, I’ve maintained a façade of certainty about my academic pursuits, which has turned out to be more stressful than I anticipated. The truth is, if I were to reconsider attending graduate school this year, it would hinge on receiving a return offer from my current internship—ideally in a different department that interests me profoundly. However, I’m aware that this might be challenging; the team I wish to join hasn’t added new members in two years.

This brings me to my current dilemma: Should I be candid with my manager about deferring my Master’s plans? Furthermore, would it be appropriate to inquire about potential opportunities for a return offer on that appealing team? Transparency could foster a more authentic relationship, but I’m unsure how it will affect my standing and future prospects at the company.

Sharing such personal decisions can be intimidating, especially when you’re uncertain of the reaction you’ll receive. Nonetheless, being open with my manager might clarify my intentions and demonstrate my proactive approach to my career. As I navigate this transitional phase, I welcome insights or experiences from others who have faced similar crossroads. How did you handle discussions about your future while still in an internship? Your advice could be invaluable as I make this important decision.
