As I approach the completion of my internship, I find myself in a challenging situation that many graduates may relate to. Recently graduated and initially set on pursuing a master’s degree this fall, I faced a significant shift in my plans.

Having secured a spot at my desired university and even registered for classes with a considerable tuition expense, I was ready to embark on my next academic journey. However, the fluctuating job market has led me to reconsider my choices. After careful thought and discussions with the university, I’ve decided to defer my admission for at least a year. Instead, I aim to step into the workforce, an option that has become increasingly appealing with a job offer on the table starting this September.

During my internship, I had consistently communicated my intention to continue my education. Unfortunately, this ongoing deception has started to weigh on me, and I know I must be honest about my situation. Compounding my dilemma is my hope of receiving a return offer from my current internship, specifically within a different team that aligns more closely with my career aspirations. However, this team has not hired anyone in two years, making this a long shot.

Now, I grapple with a crucial decision: Should I disclose my plans to defer graduate school to my manager? Furthermore, would it be wise to explore potential return offers within that elusive team?
