Finishing my internship soon, should I tell my manager I’m not going back to school?

Navigating the Decision: Should You Share Your Future Plans with Your Manager?

As I wrap up my internship, I’m faced with a challenging question: Should I inform my manager that I’ve decided to defer my graduate school plans?

Let me share my current situation. I recently completed my undergraduate degree and had every intention of pursuing my Master’s starting this fall. I’ve already been accepted into a respected program, and the tuition bill has certainly solidified my commitment.

Earlier this year, I secured a spring internship with the expectation that I would be transitioning into graduate studies shortly thereafter. This has been the conventional pathway for students; internships are typically designed to complement academic pursuits. However, the shifting tides of the job market have prompted me to reconsider my plans. I’ve decided to postpone my Master’s program for at least a year, as I want to seize a job opportunity that has come my way for September. Given the uncertainties ahead, it feels risky to turn down an offer only to find myself without employment.

For some time now, I’ve been telling my peers and colleagues that I would be starting my Master’s this year, and maintaining that narrative has become increasingly uncomfortable. The only scenario in which I would consider enrolling in graduate school this fall would be if I received a return offer for a position on a different team here at my internship—one that genuinely interests me. However, this outcome seems highly unlikely, as the team has not brought anyone new on board for the past two years, indicating a very limited hiring capacity.

Given this backdrop, I’m grappling with whether I should be candid with my manager about my decision to defer graduate school. Additionally, should I inquire about potential opportunities for a return offer within the other team?

This crossroads presents a significant decision for me, and I could greatly benefit from advice on how to navigate this conversation. Should I take the plunge and share my plans, or should I keep my cards close to my chest until I have a clearer outcome? The corporate world can often be a delicate balance of honesty and strategy, and I’m keen to find the right approach that aligns with my career aspirations.
