Finishing my internship soon, should I tell my manager I’m not going back to school?

Navigating Career Decisions: Should You Inform Your Manager About Post-Internship Plans?

As I approach the conclusion of my internship, I’m facing a significant decision: should I inform my manager that I’ve chosen not to return to school this fall?

Let me share my journey. Recently, I completed my undergraduate degree with plans to pursue a Master’s program at my desired university. I was excited, even going so far as to register for classes and incur quite a hefty tuition fee. Everything seemed set for my academic advancement.

However, circumstances have shifted dramatically, particularly in light of the current job market. In response, I have decided to postpone my grad school plans for at least a year, primarily because I have received a job offer elsewhere that commences this September. Given the unpredictability of employment opportunities, I’m inclined to seize this opportunity rather than risk a period of unemployment.

Throughout this time, I’ve maintained a facade of certainty, telling friends and colleagues that I would be heading back to school. The act of keeping this up has taken its toll and it feels disingenuous.

The only scenario in which I would reconsider my immediate plans for grad school is if my current internship offers me a position on a different team I’m keenly interested in. However, this prospect seems unlikely since there has been no hiring in that team for the last two years—a rather daunting reality.

Now, I’m caught in a quandary. Should I be transparent with my manager about my decision to defer grad school? Additionally, would it be prudent to inquire about potential opportunities for a return offer on the team I admire?

Navigating these career decisions can be tricky, especially as they intertwine professional aspirations and personal integrity. Sharing my true intentions with my manager may help clarify my path moving forward, but it poses the risk of confronting the uncomfortable reality of my current situation.

For anyone in a similar position, it’s essential to weigh the potential outcomes of such conversations and trust your instincts when it comes to communicating your career plans. After all, clear communication is often the key to unlocking new opportunities.
