Navigating Post-Internship Decisions: To Share or Not to Share?
As I approach the end of my internship, I’m confronted with a significant dilemma: should I inform my manager that I’ve decided not to return to school this fall? Allow me to share my journey, which I think many will find relatable.
Recently, I graduated and had every intention of pursuing a master’s degree at a prestigious university. I secured my place, registered for classes, and even faced the daunting tuition bill head-on, all while envisioning my next academic adventure.
Earlier this year, I embarked on a spring internship, convinced that I would transition directly into my graduate studies afterward—a requirement that typically accompanies such opportunities. However, after pondering the current job market and its unpredictable nature, I’ve opted to postpone my graduate school plans for at least a year. Luckily, my university has been supportive of this decision.
I’ve also received an enticing job offer to start in September, prompted by the realization that deferring my studies and entering the workforce might be more beneficial than I initially thought. This realization comes with its own set of challenges, particularly the ongoing pretense I’ve maintained about my intentions to commence my master’s program.
Herein lies the crux of my dilemma: Is it wise to communicate my decision to my manager? Moreover, should I inquire about possible return offers in a different team within the organization that aligns with my career objectives? The potential for a return offer is somewhat slim, as the team has not onboarded any new members in two years, making it a lean operation.
As I navigate these waters, I find myself weighing the importance of transparency against the unknown outcomes of my choices. Should I take the plunge and candidly discuss my future with my manager, or is it wiser to keep my intentions under wraps for now?
These decisions can feel overwhelming, yet they also present an invaluable opportunity for growth and self-discovery. If you’ve faced a similar situation, what approach did you take? Your insights could help illuminate my path forward.
