Do you think the work environment post-Covid in 2025 has turned into one of the most toxic and politically charged atmospheres we’ve seen in the last decade?

The fear of layoffs seems to have escalated tensions to an unprecedented level. I’ve never seen anything quite like this before.

There’s an atmosphere of constant conflict, with people backstabbing each other, spreading lies, indulging in gossip, and even sabotaging one another’s work files.

While this behavior is nothing new, it feels more amplified than ever.

I’ve also overheard some alarmingly insensitive comments like:

“Is Mike still out?”

“Yeah, he’s on bereavement leave; his dad passed away.”

“And? It’s been two weeks. When’s he planning to return? He should have that handled by now.”

  1. It’s definitely concerning to hear that the work environment feels so toxic and hostile in 2025. The aftermath of COVID-19 has reshaped many facets of our lives, including how we interact at work. The heightened anxiety around job security, coupled with remote work dynamics, may have contributed to an increase in negative behaviors like gossip and backstabbing.

It’s alarming to witness a lack of empathy, especially in cases like Mike’s. Bereavement is a deeply personal experience, and comments that dismiss or belittle someone’s grief reflect a troubling culture. It seems that the pressure to perform and fear of layoffs can lead to a disregard for compassion among colleagues.

Encouraging an environment of open communication, support, and understanding is essential for mitigating toxicity. Have you thought about ways to address this with your team or leadership? It might be worth discussing how to foster a more collaborative and respectful workplace.
