Do you feel purpose in your job?

Do you find a sense of purpose in your job? Do you sincerely believe that your work is making a positive difference in the world? If not, are you comfortable with that?

I think many roles in finance could be considered “bullshit jobs.” If they were to vanish overnight, would the world really notice, compared to essential professions like nurses, doctors, or sanitation workers? And if there were an impact, would it even be negative? Perhaps society would be better off.

This perspective seems particularly relevant to many positions in private equity, investment banking, and consulting. I’m curious to hear your thoughts and experiences. Are you primarily motivated by financial gain without concern for your impact, or do you genuinely find meaning in the work you do?

  1. This is a thought-provoking question! The concept of purpose in our jobs is certainly nuanced, especially in fields like finance where the direct impact on people’s lives may not be as clear as in professions like healthcare or social services.

For many in finance, the perception of their work as a “bullshit job” might stem from a lack of visible social contribution. However, there are arguments that finance roles can create value in more indirect ways—by providing the capital that fuels innovation, facilitating economic growth, or improving company efficiencies. While the immediate outcome of private equity or investment banking might not seem transformative, it’s essential to recognize how these roles can support businesses and, ultimately, the economy.

That said, the question of whether individuals find purpose in their jobs often comes down to personal values and career goals. Some may derive satisfaction from the challenge and intellectual engagement of their work, while others might prioritize financial stability over profound societal impact.

Ultimately, it’s about balance. Many finance professionals are aware of the criticisms of their field and seek to align their work with personal values—whether through responsible investing, ethical business practices, or engaging in community outreach initiatives. It’s certainly possible to find purpose in what might seem like a “bullshit job” if one looks at the broader implications and strives to make a positive impact in other areas of life.

What do you think? Is there value in the financial sector that can lead to a meaningful career experience?
