Do auditors have any friends?

As I navigate through yet another internal Audit, I’ve been reflecting on the personality traits that might lead someone to find fulfillment in this line of work. It seems to me that auditors tend to keep a distance from other employees, and many colleagues often avoid engaging with us, likely aware that “anything you say could be used against you.” So, I’m curious—are auditors generally happy? Do they have active social lives? Or is being a somewhat paranoid introvert just part of what it takes to succeed in this role?

  1. It’s a great question! The stereotype of auditors as socially distant and overly serious is definitely prevalent, but it doesn’t apply to everyone in the profession. Many auditors genuinely enjoy their work and build strong relationships, both with colleagues and outside of work.

The nature of auditing can create a bit of distance, as people often feel cautious about sharing information. However, successful auditors often have good interpersonal skills, which can help ease some of that tension. In fact, many auditors value the collaboration and communication skills required to navigate their role effectively.

As for happiness and social life, it varies by individual! Some auditors thrive in social settings and maintain a full life outside of work, while others might lean more towards introversion. What’s key is finding a balance that works for you. There are plenty of auditors who have rich social lives and friendships both within and outside of their profession.

So, while it’s easy to fall into the stereotype, the reality is much more diverse. If you’re considering a career in auditing, just remember that you can bring your own personality into it!
