Disgruntled Big 4 CPA just passed the PANCE (boards exam) and will officially be a PA (Physician Assistant). AMA!

From Numbers to Patients: My Journey from CPA to Physician Assistant

Hello, everyone! Today, I’m excited to share my significant career transition story. After seven challenging years in the Accounting field, including stints at prestigious companies like the Big 4, I’ve successfully passed the PANCE (Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam) and am officially on my way to becoming a PA. I invite anyone curious about my journey or contemplating a similar change to ask me anything!

To keep my identity under wraps due to the specifics of my situation, I’m writing under a throwaway account. If any moderators need confirmation of my journey, feel free to reach out—I’m happy to provide proof.

My background in Accounting has been anything but smooth. I cycled through various roles—starting with Big 4 Audit, then moving to industry positions, mid-tier audits, tax responsibilities, and even managing a solo practice. I ultimately landed as a hedge fund controller before realizing it was time for a change. Each role seemed to bring about a greater sense of dissatisfaction, leading me to rethink my career path.

Once I made the decision to pursue a career as a Physician Assistant, I dedicated five years to preparing for this change. I worked full-time in Accounting up until just before I started my two-year PA program, balancing my responsibilities while taking the necessary steps toward my new career.

I understand that many of you in the accounting community often express frustration regarding your careers and explore the possibility of moving into different fields. While many opt for transitions to similar roles in finance or operations, I can attest that anything is possible! So if you’re contemplating a career shift or are inquisitive about my experiences, don’t hesitate to ask me anything.

Oh, and a fun bonus: if you recognize the inspiration behind my username, you get extra points!

Looking forward to your questions!
