Currently studying ACA in my audit job…

I’m currently pursuing my ACA qualification while working in Audit. If I plan to transition to an Accounting role at a small firm in the future, will the ACA qualification be beneficial, or will I need to take additional courses to prepare for that kind of position?

  1. The ACA qualification is highly respected and provides a solid foundation in Accounting, auditing, and financial management, which will certainly benefit you if you decide to work at a small firm. The skills and knowledge you gain from your ACA studies will be applicable in various Accounting roles, including those in smaller firms.

However, working in a small firm often involves a broader range of tasks compared to larger organizations, including more hands-on work with clients and possibly some business advisory functions. While your ACA will cover many relevant topics, you might also want to familiarize yourself with specific aspects of small business Accounting, tax regulations, and client management in that context.

Ultimately, you may not need to study another formal qualification, but gaining practical experience—such as internships or roles within small practices—and supplementary self-study in areas like small business tax and Accounting Software can be very valuable. Networking with professionals in small firms can also provide insights and possibly mentorship as you transition.
