Currently in my first day in a new organization and I’ve been told we haven’t closed the book at all in 2025 HELP!!

Navigating Challenges on Day One: A Newcomer’s Perspective

Starting a new job is always a blend of excitement and anxiety, but arriving to a whirlwind of tasks can turn the enthusiasm into concern rather quickly. On my initial day in a new organization, I was faced with an unexpected situation: the financial books for 2025 still remain open. This left me wondering—how exactly do I navigate this?

I come from a year of experience as a project accountant, albeit in a role that felt undervalued. Now, I have transitioned into a financial analyst position, and what I’ve discovered on my first day is quite challenging. Currently, our Accounting team is stretched thin; three out of eight members are on leave—two on maternity leave and another absent due to personal matters. To add to the complexity, the new Accounts Payable (AP) clerk started only a week ago, and the Accounts Receivable (AR) specialist came aboard just a month prior.

The urgency is palpable. Management is eager for me to quickly get up to speed with their financial systems to assist in closing out the books. Unfortunately, I’ve learned that there hasn’t been a bank reconciliation since February. This is quite a dilemma, especially for someone who is just beginning to familiarize themselves with the processes and expectations.

How should I approach the challenges ahead? Here are a few strategies I intend to adopt:

  1. Prioritize Communication: Engaging with my team members, even those on leave, can provide insights and guidance on the systems and processes.

  2. Organize and Plan: Breaking down the tasks ahead and creating a detailed action plan will help streamline my workflow and prioritize urgent matters.

  3. Seek Support and Resources: Whether it’s tapping into online training, resources, or shadowing seasoned finance professionals, I plan to gather as much knowledge as possible in the shortest timeframe.

While the situation may seem overwhelming, I am determined to turn these challenges into a learning opportunity, ensuring that I contribute positively to the organization and lay a solid foundation for my new role. Here’s to embracing the unexpected while carving out a new path!
